They then both turn to a side by side position & both do a forward rock. They turn back to face each other & step to the side (man on L, girl on R foot). Then turn to side by side position & both do a forward rock step.

>> Do '3' of these forward rock steps (1 QQ, 2 QQ, 3 QQ . . ). But on the last one - 4QQ - after the side step, the man will turn & do a back rock. She will turn, step forward onto her L foot, turn on that foot . . then they both step forward going back to where they were, and side step to face each other. *note: girls - try NOT TO TURN while you are taking that 1st forward step - turn AFTER you take that step. So - step forward under his arm onto your L foot, then turn (keeping your weight on that same foot), then step forward and to the side (now back to your partner).

>> Back Crosses: Both step to the side (man on R, girl on L). Then, keeping connected with both hands, turn & step into a side by side back rock. Then turn to face each other again, take a side step, and turn & do another back rock (on the other side). *But this time, the man must release his R hand from her back to be able to open up enough to be able to do this back rock. Repeat on the other side, and then again on this side - to get you to 4 measures (1QQ, 2QQ, 3QQ, 4QQ)

recap for Lesson #7 - Intermediate

We didn't (really) learn anything new this week in Tango, but we did review & improve that which we had already learned . . .
Most important things to take away:
>> Promenade to pivot turn & promenade to grapevine
- STAY DOWN! - to maintain a smooth and controlled movement, you don't want to be popping up and down. You have much better balance (especially in turns) when you stay down into the knees and move forward with a 'heel lead' - ie: not a flat foot (stomp, stomp, stomp).
- LIFT UP & OUT! - from the rib cage, lift up & extend the arms out into a wide frame to encase the lady. VIP to keep the head weight back, or everything will collapse forward & down. *This is one of the very most important things to accomplish. Leading will be so much easier and more effective by mastering these 2 key points - lift up & out, and keep the head weight back.

>> Outside to Inside Corte
- On the 3rd step (when you step back into the 1st Corte) - guys - you want to position the girl to step forward 'outside' of you on your R side. To do this, just turn your body slightly to the L (*from the waist only). This will create a space thru which the lady can step forward to come along your R side.
- When you shift your weight forward, let your L foot slide up behind your R, and at the same time 'snap' your frame to the R - that will turn your partner into promenade position.
- Then, unwind (by turning yourself leftward) - but keep the frame!! That will bring the lady forward & coming around you rather than getting stuck behind your R hip. *Turn your frame to the L now to get her to face you - before stepping back into the Inside Corte. Then shift weight forward onto your R foot, and . .
- Forward, Side, Drag

** Ladies - ** to be a great follower >> keep your head weight back over your left foot at all times, and elbows forward (not drooping). Also, stay down into your knees so that you can take those amazing long steps that will make you look so graceful and powerful in the Tango dance.

Recap for Lesson #6 - Beginners

First night of the Rumba dance . .

Basic step: Man steps side step w/his R foot. Then a small forward step w/his L foot, rock back onto his R. Side step to the L, step back onto R foot, and rock forward onto L foot. Her steps are the 'exact' opposite.

Count each Slow (that would be the 'side steps') as 1, 2, 3, 4 - ie: 1, quick quick, 2 quick quick, 3 quick quick, 4 quick. (quicks are the rock steps)

Forward Crossovers: Man starts this pattern exactly the same - step to the side w/the R foot. But this time, he releases his R hand from her back; and they both turn (to side x side position) and do a forward rock step (forward, then back onto the other foot). They then turn to face each other & both do a side step (switch hand holds), open up on the other side & both do a rock step. Repeat 2 more times (a total of 4 times - 1QQ, 2QQ, 3QQ, 4QQ)

Note: when you finish with the last (4QQ), you are both back at the beginning - Man steps side to the R, and she steps side to the L - *go right back to the beginning - the basic step.

So 4 measures of the basic steps, 4 measures of the Forward Crossovers, 4 measures of the basic, 4 measures of the forward crossovers.

Lesson recap #6 - Intermediate

'Twas Tango night! Firstly, we took the pattern that we previously learned in the Fox Trot - Promenades to pivot turn, promenades to grapevine, and side close - and with a little character adjustment, we made it into a Tango pattern. "Stay low - no rise in the Tango. Step into promenade with a 'side step' ie: do not point the toe fully forward - want to keep your upper body towards your partner. This makes for a much smoother transition going into the pivot turn. When you step into the pivot turn - guys, step around the girl, not away from her; and be sure to keep your head weight back and over your left foot."

Then we learned the Outside to Inside Cortes - Man does a L turning rock turn (small steps - forward on L & back on R whilst turning to his L). Then he steps back onto his L foot (keep the heel up so that you don't 'fall' back). While he does this, he leads the girl to Corte forward, but on his R side (outside Corte).

Then he snaps his L foot forward to come behind his R foot. At the same time, he will sharply rotate his frame to the 'R' causing his partner to pull backwards and end in a twist - her R foot held in front of her L. He then turns his body leftward (down into his knees) allowing his feet to completely unwind. His partner walks 2 small steps forward & then swivels to face him at the end of the 2nd step. They both do a Corte, shift weight forward (or back) to the other foot, and Tango Close (forward, side, together - *or in her case, back, side, together). Voila!

Lesson recap for Lesson #5 - Beginners

Last night of Swing dance! We reviewed the patterns learned before . .
>> Basic in closed position
>> Outside turn for the Lady - *Patticake hands on the 1&2, then she spins around @ the end of '2' to face him; and they both dance the 3&4 facing one another, and rock step
>> Inside turn - As the man turns the girl in the opposite direction (moves his hand xss her face & up over her head, he turns 1/4 turn to do his 1&2 (just turn to face the next wall to your right). He then lowers his hand so that his elbow is tight to his waist, and they both dance the 2nd triple. rock, step
>> New step: Inside Wrap: w/a 2-hand hold (not hand on her back), he turns her (another inside turn) into his R side (a wrap) - they both do 1&2, 3&4, rock step. Then he unwinds her to face - (same thing) - 1&2, 3&4, rock step
>> Finish: by stepping forward towards her on the '1' step (but not straight @ her -move towards the outside of her R side *no nose banging). &2 on the spot. *He should bring his L hand back to his L hip when he steps forward on the '1'.
. . 3&4 can be danced to the side, or. . he can spin to his R & dance 3&4 to the side . . note that this pattern is to bring her back to closed position, so when he steps forward towards her on the '1', he should place his R hand onto her back. NEXT WEEK = RUMBA!! We mostly reviewed the (2) patterns already learned, but I think that we made a lot more progress with those 2 patterns last night.

** Slip Pivot to Turning rock steps:
>> When dancing backwards in the Fallaway position, both parties should be looking forward (not @ each other).
>> VIP for the man to keep his head weight back over his L side - even & especially when going into a turn. Elbows up & forward; head back. He should keep his frame very steady & solid, not allowing it to collapse at any time. He does not need to manipulate the turns with his hands. If he keeps a consistent & steady arm frame, then all he needs to do is turn 'his body' in the direction that he wants to go, and his partner will sail into the turn with him.
>> On the turning rock steps, it is much more interesting if the man doesn't 'just rock', but actually steps 'forward', then 'back', then 'forward'. *Girls - this is not nap time - you need to compliment his energy with your energy.

** 2-Way Underarm Turns:
>> You all know the steps . . just to remember:
>> Guys - when you step forward on your R foot to initiate the 2nd turn, your intention is to end up side x side with your partner - so be sure to move your L hand xss in front of her right away to get her turning - otherwise, if you are too slow on that - she will move away from you. Also, as you step forward, turn your body towards her so that there is no arm strain - makes it easier for her to turn.

** Then we worked on Progressive Twinkles - 1/2 boxes that only go forward (for the man), but 'turning' - so that after the 1st 1/2 box, he always steps forward 'outside' of her. *Keep the frame tight - both partners. This will make the turning so much easier & smoother. Floppy frame from either partner will make this a real struggle.

Recap for Lesson #4 - Beginners

Full hour on the Swing dance. We reviewed the basic step - triple to the side, triple to the side, and rock, step.

Then we reviewed the 'outside' turn. Man patticakes her hand with his L hand as he dances the 1st triple to the left, then raises the hand up over her head on the
'2'. She spins around to face him (between 2 & 3) - ie: she dances 1&2 to her R, spins, then 3&4 to her L (facing him again). He just does the same steps - 1&2 to his L, and 3&4 to his R, and rock step.

Then the 'inside' turn: He turns his hand xss in front and between the two of them (to turn her in the other direction) while he dances 1&2 to his L - *but! he also turns his body one quarter of a turn to his right. She turns on those 1st 3 steps to face him again. Then they both do their 2nd triple step (her to her L, and him to his R, and rock step.

Last step: Bringing her back in - He starts by stepping forward on the '1' while he pulls his L hand back to his hip, and placing his R hand on her back again. This brings the girl back to him. &2 is just danced on the spot. Then he does his 2nd triple to the R (as always), and rock step. *He could turn that 2nd triple to the R if he wanted to - just spin off '2' turning to the R.

Recap for Lesson #4 - Intermediate

Well, I think we nailed that (grr-rr) Fallaway to Slip Pivot & pivot turns. A turning 1/2 box, to the slip pivot, then L turning pivot turns (L forward (turning), R back (turning), and L forward (turning). Finish that pattern with the 'back' part of the box step.

Then we did the 2-Way Underarm Turns:
1 full box, but the gal goes forward into the man on the 4th step & 2 more forward steps (5 & 6) under the man's arm. She now has her back to him.
Then they both step forward, turning to face each other (her R, his L), and side together.
Then the man 'inside turns' the girl as he steps forward onto his R foot & turns himself to be beside her. She turns on the spot to end up back in the same place.
Then they both step forward (turning to face). And they finish with the back part of the box step. Pretty!

Lesson #3 recap - Beginner's level

1st 1/2 of the lesson was strictly reviewing the Slow Nite Club - see lesson recaps 1 + 2 (R side of the page)

2nd 1/2 of the lesson >> beginning to learn the Swing. Man danced a triple step to his L (1&2), a triple to his R (3 & 4), and then a rock step (very small step backward onto his L, and just step forward onto his R foot. Lady the exact opposite, starting to her R - BUT! She also does a 'back' rock - in other words, when he steps back on his rock step she does not follow him with a forward step. Instead, she also steps back & then forward (back on her R foot (small) & forward onto her L foot. *All steps should be compact. This dance has lots of movement (ie: hips & knees), but does not cover a lot of space.

Then (we started) to learn another pattern with an underarm turn for the girl. After the rock step of the 1st pattern, the man raises his L hand to about shoulder level (no higher) & flattens his hand to hers - as they both dance the 1st triple step facing each other. Then, on the '2', he raises that hand up & above her head, and she spins around to face him. Then they both dance the exact same steps as in the 1st pattern, except that she turns between steps 2 and 3 (1&2, spin, then 3&4 (facing him again). He does the same steps as well, except for the L hand patty-caking hers on the 1&2, and then up & over her head.

Intermediate Lesson recap - Lesson #3

1st 1/2 of the lesson was spent on reviewing the Fox Trot - promenades to pivot turn, and promenades to grapevine, and finish w/side together. *Points to remember are >> when going into the pivot turn, VIP for both parties to hold their head weight BACK over their left foot - do not collapse forward into your partner. Keep a solid frame - man must not pull his partner into him. Just swing into the turn with the L side of the body. Then R foot clearly forward between her feet. On the grapevines - keep upper body towards each other (not turning), but lots of turn in the lower body. Light and buoyant - compact steps, this is all about 'turning'.

2nd 1/2 hour >> Waltz - Fallaway to slip pivot & turning rock steps. We only got 1/2 way thru this pattern. Man steps forward (slightly turning L), then side, together. By the end of the 3rd step, they should both be positioned in promenade position. The idea of the fallaway is to turn from a forward direction to a backward direction ('cause now you will be traveling backwards). Both parties now dance 2 steps backward. On the 3rd step, the man steps back w/his R foot (turned slightly inward) & rotates his body to the L - WITH HIS L FOOT HELD IN FRONT (thighs

Beginner's level - Lesson #2:

Firstly, we totally reviewed all of Lesson #1 - Side Sways, Forward & Back Walks, Promenade to Reverse, and the Pivot Turns (see posting for Lesson 1)

But on Lesson 2 we added 'Wraps & Circular Walks' to our Slow Nite Club dance . . .
> The Man raises his L hand & turns the girl w/a counter-clockwise circular action - into his R side, as he commences to walk in a R turning circle. He is walking forward, and she is walking backward. (4 - 6 steps approx.)
> Then he unwinds her (just reverse the turning of the girl w/your L hand again, guys).
> As his L hand comes down, he raises his R hand & moves it counter-clockwise whilst turning himself into HER R side. Now he will walk backwards, and she will walk forward steps. Guys - your R hand is in front of you now holding her hand. Move that hand to bring her 'forward' as you go back - otherwise, she will get stuck behind your hip. *Note: (guys)when you are walking forward, she is on your R side; but when you are walking backwards, she is on your L side.
> This week (Lesson #3) we will review, review, review all of the above in the 1st

Intermediate Level - lesson #2

Technique, technique, technique!! We mostly worked on the same material as in lesson #1 - promenade steps to pivot turns and promenades to grapevine. But we spent most of this 2nd hour on the technique.

Just to review some points:
1) promenade steps - the first step into promenade is actually a forward progressing side step (in other words, don't point the toe fully in the direction that you are traveling - it will cause your body to overturn 'away from' your partner. Turn at the knees, but don't turn your upper body away from your partner. The 2nd step is xssed over the 1st along the same line and direction.
2) Pivot turn - Girl should be slightly behind the man - her L hip is slightly behind his hip. That way, when he steps around her he can easily get xss her. He should starting shaping his L side into the turn on the 2nd promenade step, so that when he steps around her with his L foot (going into the pivot turn), it will be smooth and continuous. *Remember guys - step right around her, moving your body strongly over your L foot (1/4 turn). Then continue to rotate another 1/4 turn - KEEPING YOUR RIGHT FOOT HELD FORWARD, and then step (R foot) forward between her feet.
3) Then 2 more promenade steps. Slide your R hand (guys) from her back to a finger-tip hold and step (both partners) - Side, back, side, forward - all the while turning the hips, knees and feet; but not the upper body. Should be light and buoyant - slightly up on the side steps, and lower on the back & the forward steps. Very compact steps. This is all about the turning of the lower body.

Then . . . we (started) to learn an open Twinkle to Lady's underarm turn. Man steps forward on L, forward & 'slightly' to the side onto R foot, and then a very small step L into promenade. He then steps xss (still in promenade) w/his R foot, and side together. *Just as he starts to step the small step into promenade, he raises his L arm to allow the girl to begin her turn. She steps forward (turning to her R), then (w/her back to him) - side on L & continues turning to face him, and side together. *She 'could' do a spiral during that side turning step - drawing the R toe in front of her L foot as she turns - and then (same foot) out to the side, and together.

Recap of your 1st dance Beginner's lesson...

Beginner's class: Slow Nite Club . .
Slow Nite Club is an easy-going (somewhat soft) dance that is danced to most of the popular slower songs.
We learned several dance steps in this dance, but we also talked about several factors that are VIP as per dancing in a relationship with another person. Only 1 person can lead, and I think it was determined that that would be the man. Ha! Leading isn't about muscling your partner around - pushing, pulling, shoving. If the man holds a good & sold frame with his arms, then all he has to do is to move wherever he chooses to move, and she will move with him because she is connected w/in his frame. But this is a partnership - both parties have to contribute to the success of this connection. The women need to "tighten" the connection to their partners. They do this by pulling their head weight back over the back of their heels, and at the same time - extend their arms forward into the man to create a constant resistance. That way, when he steps forward, he will not crash into her. This takes practice - a lot.

1st step: Side Sways - (always starting with his L foot, and her with her R foot), they step to to side, swinging the other foot to the 1st; and then repeat in the other direction.

Forward & Back Walks: 2 steps forward, starting w/L foot, for the man; and 2 steps back (R foot starting) for the gal. Back Walks - he steps 2 steps backward, and her forward. **Note: dance the side sways before, in between, and after each set of (2) walking steps

Promenade to Reverse: Man steps out to his L (forward) - 2 steps - L, then R, leading the girl to walk forward in the same direction. He then releases his R hand from her back, does a 180 degree reverse turn, and they both dance 2 more steps backward along the same line of dance. He then turns to face her (replacing his R hand onto her back), and they both do the 2 Side Sways.

Now . . they need to turn around, as this step only travels in one direction. This is accomplished by doing a Pivot Turn. He takes a side step onto his L whilst turning 1/4 of a turn (vip that he turns with his whole body, not just his foot). He then turns another 1/4 turn whilst stepping his R foot forward between her feet. Voila - they are now turned around 180 degrees.

Recap of your 1st dance Intermediate lesson...

Intermediate class: Fox Trot . . .
We worked on a few variations to attach to promenade steps - pivot turns & grapevine steps . .

1) The pivot turns are just 2 steps that turn the partnership to the R. Man steps to the side onto his L foot, but turning his body onto that step - not just his foot. This foot placement will cause the girl's R foot to land in between his feet. Then he continues to turn to the R & steps forward between her feet w/his R foot. VIP that he does not pull his R foot back, but instead places it 'forward'.

2) Grapevine steps: These are steps that travel to the Man's L - compact turning steps. Please don't take big steps as it will ruin the entire look. The turning is done thru the feet, the knees, and the lower body. The upper body stays facing the partner - turning is from the waist down. Step - side, back (along the same line), side, and forward (again, along the same line). Always turn 1st, and then step. So - turn the hips & knees and step side, turn the hips & knees & step back, etc. etc.

Now, let's put that all together . . .
>> 2 steps into promenade, then a pivot turn, right into 2 more promenade steps, and then 4 grapevine steps. Finish w/a 'side, together'. Note: just as you are about to start into the grapevine steps (guys), slide your R hand down from her back & pick up her L hand w/your R, so that you now have a 2-hand hold (mostly just w/the fingertips). When finishing w/the grapevine steps, replace your R hand onto her back.

Classes starting this Wednesday

Sunday classes cancelled for now. First time ever! Just not
enough people. So now he is holding both of her hands @ shoulder level - he is behind her back & she is on his R side now.

> Forward Basic to inside prep (turning her towards his body rather than away)

> Then, with his R hand raised & L hand down, he turns her clockwise till his L hand is wrapped behind her back, and her back is towards him. She steps forward (turning), back turning, and forward. In this behind the back wrap position, she should roll into his lower hand as far as she can to tighten the connection (makes for a sharper look on this & the next move). He then turns her in the opposite direction, but only 1/2 turn to face him (R hand still up). *Their R to R hands are up in the air between them, and their L to L hands are in a handshake hold (about waist level). This is called a "Straightjacket". Hmmmmm . . .

> He does the next 4 steps going forward (QQSS), whilst turning her -first w/R hand, then with L - until she is by his R side facing line of dance as he is. They both have their hands xssed in front - held in front of each other's belly button. this is "Unwind to Cross Hand Hold".

> "Reverse to Backing LOD" (line of dance) - he 'reverse' turns her - QQ - hands up & over, turning the gal. S - side step, both facing each other. S - back to LOD, ending with the same xss over hand position. Note: they are both backwards to line of dance now. He does 1/2 rotation; she does 1 + 1/2. VIP that the man never does more than 1 back step at a time, or he will end up pulling her over. He steps F,F,Side, Back.

> "Reverse to Facing LOD" - to be cont'd next week . . .

Swing Dance: - we totally reviewed everything learned thus far in the Swing (a lot!!) & put it all together - front to back. We did some fine tuning on everything - looking good, guys!!!

>

Recap for Spring Workshops #2:

Wow! We sure covered a lot of stuff last night! I didn't realize it till Laona and I danced all of the Swing material at the end of the night. So let's take a look at all that we've done thus far . . .

1) Country 2-Step: We reviewed last week's material, which was the basic step, and the prep to outside turn, and the prep to inside turn. Remember - you always turn (prep) her into the opposite direction of where the actual turn will be going.

>> Prep to outside turn & shoulder catch: Starts the same as the regular outside turn, except this time the girl turns 1 + 1/2 turns ending with her back to her partner. Once she arrives at this position, he "catches" her by placing his R hand on her L shoulder. Her turns (3 - 1/2 turns) happen on Q, Q, S. Then they both step forward on the last S (note: he is slightly behind her & to her L).

>> Dance a basic step forward (QQSS), and on the last S - prep her to the inside . .

>> Then turn her into an inside turn on the next QQ - picking up her L hand into your R as she turns. She will end up in a 'wrap' position on your R side.

>> Both do a forward basic

>> Unwrap her to face on the next QQ, and now in closed position again - Man steps forward on the 2 S's, and girl steps back 2 steps.

>> Hammerlock: Keeping his R hand down & allowing it to wrap around and behind the girl's waist, the Man raises his L hand & turns the girl 2 full turns into a hammerlock position. (remember - each of her turns is 1/2 of a turn, so she is turning 4 times). She will end up facing him when in the hammerlock. Keeping this position, he could do a basic - him going forward & her stepping backward.

>> Then he will turn her (inside turn) to face him, releasing his R hand & bringing his L elbow in to his L side - this is to bring her directly back in front again, as when in the hammerlock she is off to his R side.

2) Swing: After reviewing the outside & inside turns in the Swing dance - with our without sharp turns for the gal - her choice, and the Slip to the Eggbeater . . .

>> Kicks (or 'flicks') - After a rock step, the Man lowers slightly &(very small) kicks L, step, R, step, L, step, R, step - (girl is R,L, R,L). He then pulls his L hand back to his L hip to stabilize the girl, and they both do 4 more kicks outside & inside of each other's legs - facing each other. Then a rock step.

>> After the rock step, the man will shape his body to the L to bring the girl around in front w/a rotational movement - on the 1&2. Couple reasons for this - it looks sharp & stylish; and it makes it easy for him to pick up her L hand into his R (no fuss, no muss) - just slides right in. Then they do the 3&4 facing each other, and a rock step. Then he will travel forward past her L side (which looks R of her from his perspective), keeping the R hand down & raising the L hand to allow her to pass under. He turns to face her on the 3&4 (now in a hammerlock), and then he 'expands' to step back into a rock step and at the same time sending her back into her rock step (expand & contract). When he contracts (on the forward step of the rock step), he will brace his L arm in front of his waist (to brace her into a stationary position), and then they both do 4 kicks. She is on his R side when they do this. Rock step . . . and then unwind her in the next pattern.

Lesson Recap for Spring Workshops #1:

First Hour: Country 2-Step:
1) We learned the Basic Step in Country - constantly moving forward, the Man steps forward 4 steps (QQSS). Very important for him to stand tall with a very solid frame. The gal needs to stand very tall as well, keeping her body weight over the balls of her feet - but at the same time making sure that she keeps her back tight and taught into her partner's hand (on her back). If she loosens this connection, she won't be effective in controlling her own movements or balance. She needs to stay light on her feet (not heavy) to be able to react spontaneously to all of his movements & leads. She is going backward with 4 steps (QQSS).
** Remember - Man starts with his L foot, and girl w/her R.

2) Basic Step to 'prep' step: Same steps - but on the last S, the Man turns his frame to his L, which turns the gal slightly inward towards him. This is the 'prep' step.

3) Lady's Outside Turn: The Man continues to do the same steps forward (QQSS), but just before the first Q, he will raise his L hand & hold it over the top of her head (fingertips only) while she does 2 turning steps to her R. Girl - turning to her R, she steps forward on her R foot (now her back is to him); then still turning, she steps back (now facing him again) - so two 1/2 turns. Then she steps back, back on the 2 Slows.

4) Repeat step #2 - except this time the Man rotates his frame to his R, which causes the girl to turn in - but this time she is turning to her R.

5) Lady's Inside Turn: Really - the same as step #3, except that the girl is turning to her L on the first 2 Q's, and then back, back on the S's.

2nd Hour: - Swing:

1) Basic Step: A triple step to the L, a triple step to the R, and a back rock step (step back on L, forward on R). Lady's part is exact opposite, except that her rock step is back, forward as well. When in closed position (ie: he has his R hand on her back) they have to do this back rock step side by side, so they have to turn slightly towards each other (his R side by her L side).

2) Outside to Inside Turns: The Man raises his L hand after the rock step of the first pattern (palm to palm), as they both dance the 1st triple to the side. Then he raises his L hand more to allow her to go under. She does a sharp turn to her R (now her back is to him) & does her 2nd triple. He just does his 2nd triple on the spot (VIP that he doesn't travel 'away' from her). Then she does another sharp turn to her R (to face) & does her back rock step. Now, she does a sharp turn to her "L" (her back is to him again) & does a 1st triple, turns sharply to face him to do her 2nd triple, and they both do a back rock step (facing one another). **Note: it is the girl's option to do these sharp turns. She could just rotate on the turns without the 'sharpness'. Her option!

3) The Slip: With a 2-hand hold, the Man raises both arms & drops his R hand over and behind her head, and his L hand drops over and behind his own head. He then lets go with his L hand, also lets go with his R hand, but that hand stays in contact with her as he slides it down her arm till he "catches" her hand (now it is a 'handshake' hold). Same steps as in pattern #1. After he catches her hand, they both do a 'rock step'.

4) The Eggbeater: The man pulls his R hand in till the gal's back is facing him & he taps her on the back. He then swings his arm the other way so that she turns towards him - and he turns to his L so that his back is facing her, and she taps him on the back. Repeat both turns. Now, he turns her again so that he can tap her on the back, but then he pushes into her R hand & lets her do a free spin around (no hands) while he just does a triple step on the spot. Now, both facing, they do a rock step. ** All of these steps are triples until the very end (after the spin), and then the rock step.
** After she spins around, he picks up her R hand into his L.

Lesson recap for Lesson #10 - Beginner's

Lesson #10 - our last lesson of this dance season - You were all amazing!

We totally reviewed: Box Step, Chasse step, and the Copa Compasso (see previous dance recaps (always look for the date just after each Sunday - R side of this page)

The only new pattern that we learned was the 'Turning Box'. This is the same as the regular box, except that the Man turns to his L on the forward and on the back step. He should only turn on these steps, and not on the side steps. So . . forward turning, straight to the side & together; then back turning, & straight to the side & together. If he does 'no turn' whilst stepping to the side, it is easier for his partner to stay connected to him - so just on the 'forward' or the 'back' step.

Voila! That's your Samba dance! All of your dance recaps are posted - you can look back to each of all of your 10 lessons. If you didn't keep notes of all the new steps that you've learned - they are all posted here, right from Lesson #1 - just look back to find the lesson that you want to check out. As per this week . . .

1) Copas to 'open & passing' Chasses - just a few reminders: partners should stay close at the hip on the Copas - without looking crowded or cramped; and then open up creating some space on the 'side break step'. Man steps R foot over L & chasses xss and in front of his partner (1+2+2+2+3+2+4+2). He then chasses in the other direction (to 8+2), then to his L again, but chasses in a circle on 11+2+12+2 to face his partner again. He should always curve somewhat as he passes her to maintain an appearance of 'connection' to her.

2)Progressive Botafogos - (Abbotsf students - you learned #3 on Lesson 9, but this pattern was taught (to you) on lesson #10 - so look back to lesson recap dated 3/14) - VIP that the man fully transfers his weight forward onto the front foot (count '2') each time after strongly rotating the gal - or . . she won't be able to step back on her '2' step. Guys - if the heel of the rear foot is 'down', you haven't fully transferred your weight onto the forward foot. Gals: "fill out his frame" by keeping your head back & tightening his frame connection. This will enable you to master those sharp turns & to be able to step back into that 'sitting' position.

3) Shadow Botofogos: Dance 3 Copas into promenade, 1 side break (4+2) - he releases his R hand from her back. Then they both do Botafogos, changing sides, and he is behind her (thus the name "Shadow") - U/A turning her as he passes - do '3' (to &+2). Then, after the 3rd Botafogo, he steps forward on R (still behind her, but now turning inward to face her), lets his R hand catch her on the back (to closed position), and now facing, they both do x-over chasses (he is traveling to his L, and she is traveling to her R). > 8+2+9+2+10+2. Then, he steps forward into the gal for a full Box step (11+2, 12+2)

Recap of Lesson #9 - Beginner's

It was all about the Samba dance!! . .

Firstly we reviewed everything from Lesson #8 (still posted, so you can look it up), but . . we made a slight change on the last pattern - the Copa Compasso . . .

1) Instead of just '1' 5th position break to start - we did '2' - one to the L (guys), and then one to the R. (*This is - a side step (L), toe to heel (R), and then step L foot in place. Then just repeat the same starting side to R.

Then . . Measure 3, 4, 5 doing the Copas (traveling to the Man's left. Side break on the 6th measure, and then xss outside foot (L for the man) over & step xss & in front of the R foot, R foot back, xssover w/L, R foot back - to '9 & 2'. Then, step back into a back 1/2 of a box step, side together. Can't believe it - 9th week already!!

The hour was totally about Samba . . .

1) We reviewed the Samba Walks (Copa) to the open (& passing) Chasse steps (from
Lesson #8)

2) Then we embarked on a scary new venture - Closed position & Progressive Botafogos
The man does 4 (c/b 6) forward Botafogos (step forward on L, then side on the 'ah' (R), and replace L foot in same place. Then the same starting forward onto the R foot. VIP to remember that you do place weight on the 'ah' step, but you don't move your spine entirely over that foot, as then it would be too hard to get out of there.

The gal's part is somewhat harder to do. She is doing backwards Botafogos, but she is almost 'sitting' every time she steps on the '2' count. He will strongly rotate her from side to side, but VIP that she keeps a strong frame & keeps her body tight into his R hand. If she loosens that connection point, it will be almost impossible to do this pattern well. She steps - back, side (turning), & then back again.

Recap for Lesson #8 - Beginner's

1st 1/2 hour - total review of the Waltz steps - Box, Progressive Forward 1/2 Boxes, L & R 1/4 Turns, and a Box w/a Lady's Underarm Turn

2nd 1/2 hour - the beginning of the fun & livley Samba dance . . .
1) Box step - rise up onto balls of feet 'before' stepping forward onto 1st step, then forward, step side, and 'pull' the other foot to close. Back on R foot, step side, and 'pull' the other foot to close. Box step is just dancing in a square - always remembering to use one foot & then the other (never same foot twice). Progressive Forward steps are: Forward on L foot, side on R, L foot comes together with R. Then, step R foot forward, L foot to the side, and step R foot together to L. Repeat both of these forward 1/2 boxes. ** Good idea to slightly lower (guys)just before stepping forward each time - this tells your partner that you are about to do something. It also helps to get her into motion so that you will be able to smoothly move forward into her without startling her.

We learned how to do '2' turning 1/4 turns - 1) Step back onto L foot, hold for count of 3, then step forward onto R foot (turning 1/4 turn to the R), side on L, together w/R foot. 2) to turn to the L - Step forward oLnto L foot, hold for count of 3, back on R foot (turning leftwards), side onto L foot, and R foot comes together to the L foot. ** These 2 turning steps are quite useful for negotiating a corner in a room, or to get out of a tight situation on the dance floor - to change direction.

And lastly, we learned how to do a 'Lady's underarm turn'. Simply put, the man is dancing 2 complete box steps - but, on the 2nd box, he turns 1/4 turn to his L (to come back to his partner who just went underneath his raised arm (L). The gal does a back 1/2 box (back, side, together), then steps forward (into the man) on her L foot, 2 forward moving steps under his raised arm (R, then L), one more forward step (R), and side step, together. They are now back together.

Recap for Lesson #7 - Intermediate level

2nd week on the beautiful Waltz dance . .

We reviewed the 'Face to Face; Back to Back' - looks like everyone has a good handle on that one. I liked the way all you guys are mastering the lead on that, and dancing with much more 'flow' than ever before.

We also reviewed a past learned pattern - the 2-Way Underarm Turn - first 3 measures are the same as the above pattern; but then the man leads the gal into an inside turn as he steps forward w/his R foot to come alongside of her - Forward, Side, & together. @ the end of these 3 steps, partners should be side by side - with a one-hand hold. Then both step forward onto the foot closest to the partner, turn to face each other on the side step (where he resumes closed position), and feet close.

We also reviewed the Progressive Forward steps, dancing 'outside partner'. Man starts by stepping forward into the gal, then side step - but angling to a 'diagonal' step, feet together; and then continues with forward 1/2 boxes, but each time taking the forward step 'outside' of his partner. On the 5th measure, he steps forward, but then stops & hold for 3 counts - VIP that when he does this, he keeps his head weight back so that he doesn't lose his balance by falling forward. Then he steps back onto his R foot, side onto L, and together (6 measures - ** all 3 of these patterns are '6' measures).

Recap for Lesson #6 - Beginners

Our first week on the Waltz dance!! Slowing down quite a bit from the Cha Cha dance. Waltz is not considered a 'fun' dance really - it is more of an elegant & flowing dance. But once you start to feel the beauty of this dance with your partner - you will surely fall in love (with the dance, and if not already - with your partner).

> 1st pattern: The Box step: like painting a box on the floor with your feet >> The man steps forward onto L, to the side w/R foot, and then brings his L foot together to his R foot. NOTE: He just stepped on his L foot - SO-O-O - that means that he will then step Back on his R foot. And then a side step to his L with his L foot, and close together R foot to L. Gal's part is the exact opposite.

** To be a smooth dancer, and to let his partner know that something is about to happen (ie: that he is going to start a movement, or change direction), the Man should lower slightly into his knees first), and then take the step. *Try to avoid doing the lowering "during" the step - should be done just "before" stepping.

** VIP that both partners keep their head weight back over their shoulders, and not TIP into the centre twds their partner.

> 2nd pattern: Progressive Forwards: In this pattern, the man dances the 1st 1/2 of the Box step '4' times - except that on the 1st 1/2 Box - he steps Forward L, side on R, and together with L foot. Then he steps Forward R, side on L, and close R foot to L. (always changing feet, never using the same foot twice). Then, to get all 4 measures, he just repeats both forward 1/2 Boxes that he just did.

NOTE: His L foot will move forward just outside of the Lady's R foot - because of the offset position that they have to one another (she is to his R side somewhat). When he steps forward on his R foot though - he will step between her feet.

** ONE LAST THING: On a forward step, you should step onto the heel - no baseball slides. On a backward step, you should push the toe backward & only let the heel drop at the end of the step. *This is only possible if the head weight is held back over the shoulders.

Recap for Lesson #6 - Intermediate

This is our 1st week on the Waltz dance for this season. We learned a gorgeous pattern called 'Face to Face, Back to Back' . .

> 1st 2 measures were the Box w/Underarm Turn (from beginner's level). Then they both step Forward (kinda side x side, except that when the girl goes under his arm with her forward steps, she ends up being a little bit ahead of him) - just before they take this 'new' forward step. So the man has to take a slightly more aggressive forward step to catch up to her. *Girls - do not compromise the size of your steps to stay back with the man. You WANT to get ahead of him - he'll catch up! Then, turning to face one another with a Side step, they connect the other hand. And then - close the feet. *As you are closing the feet, you should "lower" to create enough power to step out onto the next (turning) step. This step is forward along the line of dance (for both partners).

He is turning to his R, and she is turning to her L. They both step forward (turning away from each other). Continue to turn to the Side step - *now they are both 'back to back'. Close the feet with the other foot.

NOTE: On that side step - it is actually 'side & slightly forward'. The man will lead this step with a Left side lead (ribcage). The arms will extend forward, but only because of this Left side lead. In other words - no pulling on the arm. *Both partners should be looking forward down the line of dance at this point.

> Now (5th measure) - The man steps L foot forward along the line of dance, leading his partner to do the same - but he is commencing to rotate towards her. Then, on the side step, he will have turned all the way to face her, place his R hand on her back, and when he closes his feet - he will continue the turn just enough to turn her to promenade position. * He can either let go of her other hand as he starts to place his hand on her back, or he can just keep the connection. But if he lets go, he mustn't rush to pick it up.

> 6th measure - Both partners step forward (going back on the line of dance)xss themselves, and Side step to face, and then feet close together. THE END.

Recap of Lesson #5 - Beginners

On lesson #5, the Cha Cha, we added some Outside Crossovers into our dance routine. That is where the man dances forward rock steps only, and the girl dances back rock steps only - and when he steps forward into a rock step, he steps just outside of her. After the turn around from last week's steps, the man cha-cha-cha's to the side into the 1st outside crossover. He then cha-chas to the other side of her to an outside crossover, and once again he cha chas to his R to an outside crossover, then to the L, and both turn around. Whenever he does a forward rock step, she is doing a back rock step.

Then we adapted the entire routine to Rumba music - just by trading the cha-cha-cha side steps to "one" side step only. So, we danced rock step, SIDE, rock step, SIDE. - A single step between rock steps instead of a triple step.

Cha Cha is a fun dance to be sure - but it is not the easiest dance to learn. Next week we start on the Waltz. Waltz is a beautiful flowing dance. You will likely find it to be somewhat easier to learn.

Never ever get down on yourself when learning to dance. Is it challenging?? Yes, for sure, absolutely! But enjoy the journey. Laugh at yourself sometimes. It gets easier & even more fun. And remember - if you're feeling frustrated once in awhile, think about your partner. A big hug would be a great idea!!

Recap for Lesson #5 - Intermediate level

Wow! Busy lesson - no new steps, but lots of work on those that we'd already been learning. And that's the way that it should've been!

I noticed a huge difference in all of you at the end of the hour. Your partnership skills improved so much in that one hour. Guys - you were leading, guiding, and protecting your partners on every move. And girls - you were very actively following your guys like never before.

And that was exactly what the hour was all about - "communication between leader & follower". That pattern is called Shadow Crossovers. With a 'handshake hold', the man leads his partner thru a X-Body lead, a cha-cha-cha, and then to a Forward Crossover > but still w/a handshake hold. He "shadows" her by holding his L hand out & behind her upper back (not actually touching her).

He then leads her into another X-Body lead (other direction) & a 'shadow' Forward Crossover.

Then (staying square to each other), he leads her to a cha-cha-cha, an Underarm Turn (still w/his R hand) as he does a back rock. Then cha-cha-cha to the side (facing each other), he does a forward 1/2 basic whilst looping his R hand over his own head.

Voila - 8 measures!!

Recap for 3rd lesson - Beginner's level:

In the 1st 1/2 hour we completely reviewed all of our Slow Nite Club moves (see 1/17 & 1/24 for recaps).

Then we started on a new dance - the Cha Cha. We learned a new pattern that incorporated the hitch-kick action once again. Starting with the back 1/2 of a basic (side on L, back rock, and cha cha to the R), then a front 1/2 basic, but on the triple going to the L, 'side, together, and then the 3rd 'cha' is danced diagonally to the side'. This opens up the man's L side to allow the gal to step 'forward' to begin to dance past him. So, she dances - side, together, forward (cha cha cha). His lead here should be thru a shaping of his body leftward (in the direction of where he is going) rather than just pulling her with his arms.

Then he does a back rock - but "turning". VIP that he does not step back pulling his body away from his partner, but instead - his R foot steps behind his L, but turned inward as he turns his body another 1/4 turn. So he first turns 1/4 turn (on the 3rd cha), and then another 1/4 turn w/his back rock. She steps another step forward & then pivots a 1/2 turn to a back step on her R foot to face him.

Then they both cha cha cha to a hitch kick, flick & turn, cha cha cha in the other direction, repeat same steps, cha cha cha to other direction to a forward rock step, then cha cha cha to other direction, and both do a 'no-hands' turn around.

Recap for Lesson #2 - Beginner's:

1) for 1st 1/2 of what we did - review the recap for Lesson #1/Beginner's

2) New: After doing the 'grapevine' - do 2 side sways. Still keep a 2-hand hold. Then the man raises his L hand (only) & turns the girl clockwise till she is in a hammerlock position. Then they both walk around in a circle (forward steps) - 6 steps. He walks L,R,L,R,L,R. She walks R,L,R,L,R,L. Then he stops, unwinds the gal (counter-clockwise) w/his L hand, brings his R hand up & circles it (counter-clockwise) over his own head as he backs into her R elbow. He will now be on her R side w/his arms crossed - His R arm xssed over his L. Now, he will walk backwards into a circle (6 steps, starting w/L foot), and she will walk forward into the circle. After this 2nd circular walk, he will then unwind her to face him. And Voila!! Repeat w/R foot (and toe); then w/L; then w/R. Note: when doing the toe points, you do not actually put any weight onto that foot. The timing is QQS, QQS, QQS, QQS. Very important that you do not just step 'xssing over yourself' - you need to swivel your feet, and turn the entire lower body (hips and knees) about 180 degrees with each point & step. This pattern is mostly about the turning in the body. Finish w/a rock step. Should use a bracing action with the hands and arms, about chest height. Partners can feel the swiveling & turning action of the other partner when this bracing action is done properly. Good idea to keep steps compact - remember, it's about the 'turning'.

Recap of Lesson #1 - Beginner's class

Our first dance of the season is Slow Nite Club - music for this dance is the most (by more than 80% of the time) played slow music anywhere.

NOTE: These instructions work hand in hand w/your actual lessons - not meant to replace the lessons.

We learned how to position ourselves with our partner. The gal is more to the man's R side than centred in front of him. Her R shoulder should be in line w/his sternum. Now they have 4 tracks instead of just 2. The man always starts w/his L foot, and the girl w/her R foot. Because (we at least assume) the man is the leader here, when I say L - I mean his left; when I say 'forward', I mean his forward.

1) Side Sways: Man steps to the side w/his L foot, and allows the R foot to slide together to the L, but no weight change onto that foot. Same thing then in the other direction. (count = 1,2 3,4)

2) Basic Forward & Back: Starting w/the side sways (first L, then R), the man then takes 2 forward walking steps (L, then R). 2 more side sways, and then 2 steps walking backward (L, then R). The girl's part is the exact opposite.

3) Promenade to Reverse: Stepping forward to his L (rather than forward into the girl, the man walks 2 steps forward, does a 1/2 turn (between beats), and then on the same line - 2 steps walking backwards. The lady does the exact same. She travels forward alongside him, and then backwards as well. They finish by turning to face each other & dance 'side sways' again. BUT - the man will take a 2-hand hold w/his partner instead of placing his R hand onto her back. They need the space in order to be able to comfortably dance step # 4.

4) Grapevine: This movement(s) will follow the 2 side sways in #3. W/a 2-hand hold, both partners will step forward w/their lead foot (men - L, wmn - R) going back in the same direction from where they just came from. Keeping their upper bodies facing one another, and turning at the waist, hips & knees only - they will both step >> forward, side, back, side - all steps travel on the same line. These steps will look very nice if kept compact. It is more about the turning smoothly, not about large steps.

Recap for Lesson #1 - Intermediate level

Swing dance!! We are dedicating our first 2 + 1/2 weeks to more Swing.

Our first lesson was all about learning how to do "Lindy" Swing. You've all heard about West Coast Swing (vs what we normally do - East Coast Swing). Well, W.C. Swing was fathered by the Lindy. Instead of 6 counts - 1&2, 3&4, 5,6 (2 triples & a rock step), the Lindy has an extra '2 count' between the 2 triples. So, it is . . . 1&2, 3,4, 5&6, 7,8.

NOTE: The following descriptions will not make any sense, I'm sure, unless you have actually seen & tried these steps. So these instructions are only useful as an aid to your actual lesson.

1) Same as a regular triple rhythm step - except that there is a '2-step' between the 2 triples. Man does the left triple, then (turning the gal into an inside turn) he hooks his R foot behind his L as he travels around her, then side onto L foot. She does her first triple, then as he is turning her, she steps forward onto her L foot, then turns & steps back onto her R foot. Both finish by doing their 2nd triple, and a rock, step.

1) He will have a 'handshake hold', w/L xssed over R. The man starts to lead the gal into an inside turn into his R side - BUT he blocks her from passing - they both do a 'rock, step' first, and then, when he blocks her - a hitch kick, and then he travels (turning around the girl) to his L - stepping side on L foot. They are trading places on the floor during this step, and as he turns (180 degree turn) he swings his shoulder line (& arms) to his R - like in the backswing of a baseball swing. She steps forward on R, "and turns to her R - because of his shoulder & arm swing". Then (taking no steps) he sharply U/A turns her into the opposite direction (to face him). She - merely twists around to face him - putting no weight onto her L foot, but instead she lets her L foot slide in front of her R foot (in a cross).

Then both do the 2nd triple facing each other, and a rock step.

It's all about "NEW"!!

New classes! New Parties! New dances! And 'oh yes' - new people!!

Classes start up this coming Sunday, January 16th. Beginner's class @ 3-4 p.m.; and Intermediate 4-5 p.m.

We have the same classes on Wed eve's - commencing Jan 19th. Beginner's @ 7-8 p.m.; and Intermediate @ 8-9 p.m. NOTE: You can switch back and forth between Sun & Wed classes. The exact same material will be taught on both days for that very reason.

Location: Atchelitz Hall on Lickman Road (just 3 min. drive South from freeway)

1st day: Please come about 20-25 minutes early on the first day to get registered. Laona is looking after the registration. Just give her your name(s), and she will take care of you. NOTE: If you and your partner have different last names, you will be registered uner HIS last name. $75 p.p. (no c.c.'s please)

Dress: comfortable & casual is fine. However, SHOES are more of an issue. Running shoes are deadly for smooth slide on a dance floor. Leather soled shoes are the best, and somewhat of a heel for the ladies. That raised heel will make you much lighter on your feet. (Of course there are dance shoes that are made specifically for the dance floor, but I don't expect anyone to invest in them till you are sure that this is something that you will continue on with.)

We learned Fox Trot, Swing, Rumba & Tango in the fall. THIS SEASON - we will be learning 4 new dances - Slow Nite Club (maybe more Swing instead for 2nd level), Waltz, Cha Cha & Samba.

My name is Donna Phillips. I will be your instructor, and Laona will assist with helping me to help any of you on the dance floor.

There will be '3' Friday nite parties for fun and for practice. These are posted under 'parties' on this website. Usually the 4th, 7th, & 10th week of lessons. These parties are not open to the public. They are for 'us' only. Lots of fun - beer & wine available, everyone brings a food item, $10 p.p.

New people? >> We always welcome new people to our club. This is a very friendly dance club. You will be warmly welcomed by our existing students, and myself.

If you have any questions - now, or at any time - you can either e-mail me: dphillips@telus.net, or phone: (604)316-0294

Recap for "everyone" - Lesson 10 - the Tango dance

It's all your fault! Devil (you little devils!) made me do it! This last week we went all over the place with the Tango. Maybe because of seeing Bruce and I dancing the Tango at last Friday night's party, many of you had (different) requests when I opened the door to 'what move that you've seen in the Tango would you like to learn?'

So I'm just going to recap a few patterns that we covered in this last week - you'll recognize 'some', but 'not all' - 'cause it varied from day to day, class to class.

1) Ronde to Flick: Partners took 2 steps into promenade, then 3 rock steps (forward, back, forward - still in promenade), 3 rock steps again - but on the last one (forward rock), the rear foot releases & the toe draws a front-to-back floor ronde; then xsses over the other foot in a lock, step back with rear foot, lock again & "flick up and back' with the rear foot. Then both step forward, girl pivots to face, and they finish w/a Tango close. (** guaranteed, if you didn't learn this step - none of this makes any sense at all - ha!)

2) Outside to Inside Corte: Turning rock steps (QQ) to an outside Corte (where the man leads his partner to Corte outside of him on his R side as he steps back into his own Corte. Then he 'snaps' forward changing his weight to go onto his R foot with his L foot "locking" behind. She - snaps back w/R foot locking in front of L, and twisting to face promenade. Then the man turns to his L, keeping his weight on his R foot till his feet unwind (about 1/4 turn). She steps 2 forward steps as she comes around him as he is turning. Then he sharply turns her to face him; then both do an inside Corte (where she steps forward into his knee), and they finish w/a Tango close.

3) Promenade to pivots & promenade to grapevines: 2 steps into promenade, 4 turning pivot steps (in closed position), 2 more steps into promenade, and 4 grapevine steps. Then, a QQS Tango close ending with a 'tap & point'.

Guys! - none of these steps make any sense if you didn't learn them in class. But I'm sure that at least one of them will make sense to you. xxx donna

Recap - Beginner's level - "Tango" - week 9

First of all, we reviewed the basic forward Tango step - forward (L), forward, forward, side, and drag (L foot to R - no weight change). Important to stay down in the knees, and not 'pop up' at the end of the pattern.

We also reviewed the promenade basic. The man steps side & traveling forward with his L foot, xsses his R foot over to another forward step. At the end of this 2nd step, he rotates his frame to the L to bring the lady to face him and get back into closed position (vs promenade position). Then he steps another forward step (girl steps back), and they both finish with a Tango close.

New step - Corte - Man steps back onto his L foot, with bent knee, - foot & knee turned outwards so that the girl connects into the soft tissue of his knee rather than the knee bone. His R foot stays forward (leg straight & toe down into the floor). The girl steps forward with her R foot towards his bent knee, putting all of her lower body weight onto that foot. Only the inside of the L toe will be in contact with the floor. That leg should be straight - no weight on that foot. To counterbalance her forward weight, she needs to keep her head way back and to the L. She should actually turn her shoulder line leftward, and turn her head leftward as well.

Recap - Intermediate class "Tango" - Week 9

Last week we focused solely on the Tango dance. You learned more about how to do proper Cortes - stepping back with the L foot for the man, with the knee & foot turned out so that the girl would connect on the softer part of the knee rather than the knee bone. Back straight, and arms held forward. VIP to keep the toe of the R foot down into the floor to keep balance stabilized. Girls need to remember to keep the head weight held back & to the L. Lower body weight is all forward into the R leg, so the upper body has to 'counter balance', or loss of balance.

We did a turning rock step to a Corte, another turning rock step to a Corte, and then Tango close. We also did this pattern where we left out the middle rock step, and just repeated the Corte a 2nd time, and then on to the Tango close.

Using the exact same patterns, we then replaced the Cortes with 'fans'. This is where the man lead the girl to step forward on his R side as he stepped back on his L foot (with a bit of a slide). He turned his frame to the R, then to the L, to allow the girl to turn into her fans. Man moves his weight back onto his L foot, and forward onto his R. The girl steps forward with her R foot, and then swivels on that foot 180 degrees - allowing the free foot to trail & point (must stay in contact with the floor). Now facing the other direction, she steps (small) step forward on her L foot, and allows the R foot to trail & point when she turns to the opposite direction.

Recap of Lesson #8 - Intermediate

First 1/2 hour was spent only on review and practice of the Rumba material learned - 1) 1/2 box to progressive forward rocks, & side rocks, etc. 2) The x-body lead to side x side, then circle walks (& swivel), back walks, and side, close.

But in the 2nd 1/2 hour, we worked on the Tango dance. We did 2 patterns, both very similar to start & to end, but 'something different' in the middle.

1) Double Cortes: Gave you 2 choices >> either a turning rock step to a Corte, then another turning rock to a Corte, then Tango Close. OR . . a turning rock step to 2 full Cortes (SSSS), then Tango Close. The man (could) use a rolling action in the Cortes (that would be thru the body, 'not noisy arms' (grr-rr-rr). Because he is sending so much lower body weight back thru his L side, he should keep his head weight more to his R side, or at least centred. Gal should have her head weight back & over her L side - NOT over the man.

2) Double Fans: Same pattern, but dancing the 'fans' in place of the cortes. To lead the girl into the fans, the man must rotate his frame to his R at the end of the 2nd step - to allow space for her step through. Then he steps back onto his L & "pulls" his R foot slight back, then forward onto R foot, letting the L foot pull slightly forward. This is just to create a little bit of slack to allow the girl perform her actions. **She steps (small step) forward outside of his R side, and then swivels sharply to face the opposite direction. Then she steps forward again & swivels, and so on. She must not step too big a step on these fans, or she will create a lot of stress in the relationship within the frame. Each time that she swivels, the trailing foot will 'just point', but no weight should be attached to that point. So, she steps - then 'swivel & point'; then step - then 'swivel & point'.

Recap of Week #8 - Beginner's class

In the first 1/2 hour we just reviewed and practiced the 3 patterns learned in the Rumba 1) Box to forward crossover steps, 2) Box to back crosses (rock steps), and
3) Box (turning) to '3' outside crossovers, and then step back, side & together (back 1/2 of the box - turning).

2nd 1/2 of the hour was the introduction to the Tango dance. We learned that in Tango there is no rise and fall - the legs don't straighten, but rather we stay 'down' into the knees at all times. The man turns his body slightly to the L so that when he moves forward, he has a more interesting look in his Tango that adds some drama to this dance. The girl is (more) around his R side. Her L hand will be behind his shoulder rather than on his arm.

Step 1: Basic Forward step: Man steps forward, forward, then 'forward, side, drag'. SSQQS - The last 3 steps are called the Tango Close, and is a very common way of ending many patterns in American style Tango. VIP not to "pop up" at the end - must stay down. Lady's part is the exact opposite. **If she wants to look and feel her best, she will place her head weight over his L leg & held far enough back that if she had a very long ponytail, it would drop to the floor without touching any part of her body.

Step 2: Promenade Step: Man's steps are almost the same as in Step #1,except that both partners step the 1st 2 steps into promenade. At the end of the 2nd step he will rotate his upper body to bring his partner to face him. Then they both do the Tango Close. VIP for the lady to just 'swivel to face' at the end of step 2, but NOT TO step xss the man on step 3, as he is still coming forward. She should just swivel to face him, but keep her R toe on the floor with no weight. Then she will push that R foot BACK into the Tango Close.

Recap - Lesson #7 - Beginner's Rumba

We did a complete review of steps taught in the previous week - forward crossovers, and the 5th position breaks (back rocks).

New step: Outside Crossovers >> Man does a box step, but turns 1/4 turn to his L on the back 1/2 of the box. Then he steps side on L foot, and a forward rock step "outside" of the lady. Side step to his R, and a forward rock "outside" of the lady; and one more side step & rock step to the other side. He will then step 'back' into a back 1/2 of a box step that is turning 1/4 turn to his L. So by the end of this pattern, the couple will have turned a full 1/2 turn. The lady's part is all the exact opposite.

Lesson # 8 will be on the Rumba (review only) for the 1st 1/2 hour, and then we begin learning the fabulous Tango dance.

Recap for 6th lesson (Rumba) - Beginner's:

We definitely covered a lot of ground in this dance in the very 1st lesson of the Rumba dance. We learned . . .

1) Box Step: Man steps forward on L, to the side on R, and then closes his L foot to R. Then, he steps back on R, side on L, and close R to L. Wmn's - exact opposite.

2) Forward Crossovers: 1/2 box, a side step, then turning to be 'side by side' (one hand only), both do a forward rock step. They turn to face each other as they do a side step, and then a forward rock step in the other direction (in other words, man does a forward rock to his R, a side step, and then a forward rock to his L). They repeat - 2 more side steps to forward rocks, turning 180 degrees between. After the 4th rock step, they turn to face while stepping a side step; then step, step in place. They finish by going into a box step (he steps forward, she steps back)

KEY: A side step is a SIDE STEP - not a turning step. To look smart and stylish in this dance, turn AFTER the side step, not DURING. In other words - step side (facing partner), AND THEN turn sharply to your forward crossover step. **ALSO - when you step forward, be sure that your toe is pointed away from your body (twds your partner) - otherwise, you will end up 'pidgeon-toed'.

2) 5th Position Breaks: Same pattern as #1, except that partners replace the forward rocks with back rocks. On back rock #1 + #3, the man will have his R hand on her back, and his L arm (connected) held out in front of both of their bodies.

VIP - Most common mistake is to only 'partially' transfer your weight onto each step. This will give you a very broken & choppy look in your dancing. Make sure that you 'fully and wholly' transfer your body weight onto each step. ** On each step - move onto the foot, then continue to move your body weight onto that foot - both legs should end up being straightened.

Recap for 6th lesson (Rumba) - Intermediate:

Yikes! That was loaded! We worked on 2 brand new (and quite tricky) patterns in the Rumba dance. Put it all together, and "just gorgeous"!

1)Progressive forward & side rocks: Start with a 1/2 box, one side step, and then both partners go into a side by side forward rock step - rock forward, then back, then forward (QQS). VIP to completely transfer weight onto that 3rd step (forward) before turning to face partner for the side rocks. IN FACT, a really good Rumba dancer will 'always' fully transfer weight onto each and every step. After the forward rocks, quickly & sharply turn to face partner. Now - 3 side rocks - make the action happen thru the lower body - hips & knees, not the shoulders & arms. Then turn sharply to do 3 more forward rocks, "2" more side rocks, and man steps back & side together (2nd part of the box step).

2) Open Rumba Walks: Totally lovely pattern with the right technique and style. The man dances a 1/2 box, then turns 1/4 turn to his L doing the 2nd 1/2 of a box - but leading the girl into a x-body lead. When he closes his R foot to his L, he then releases his R hand from her back & lets her move past him to go into a 'side by side' position. He steps a very small step forward while doing this. Then, they both rock away from each other, in and towards each other - and then the man steps back onto his R foot, and gal steps forward onto her L foot. This is the beginning of their circular walk. Man walks back, back, and then slightly back but to the side (turning twds his partner). She walks forward, forward, and forward & swivel (to face her partner). Now, facing each other but still only 1 hand connected, he walks 3 steps back, and she walks 3 stepss forward. Then both do a 'side, together' whilst coming back into closed dance position. **NOTE: There are 2 places where the lady does a swivel step - at the end of the x-body lead, she swivels to end 'side by side' to him. Also, she swivels at the end of the circular walks to face him. VIP for her to keep her trailing foot close to her working foot - 'toe to instep' - rather than allowing that foot to flip outwards.

Parties! The steps that you learned this season in the Swing were:
1) Basic triple rhythm Swing step: (triple to the L, triple to the R, rock step)
2) Outside Turn: (patticake hands on the first triple, then gal spins, then both triple to the side, and rock step)
3) Inside Turn: Man moves his L hand xss in front of himself to turn the girl as he triples to his L - but he must also turn 1/4 turn to his R. Then, facing each other, they both do their 2nd triple, and rock step.
4) She Turns; He Turns: - (on the first triple, the guy turns 1/4 turn to his R - leading her into an Inside Turn, but then just after she goes under (his L hand) - he spins under on the "2" count (not before) to his L. Both end facing each other, do their 2nd triple to the side, and rock step)
5) Hammerlock: Man raises his L hand, keeping the R hand down. He then triples past the girl on her side where the hand is down, 2nd triple he continues to turn twds her *VIP that he turns enough that his R shoulder is close to hers. His L hand connection will drop down in front of his R hand connection. They both rock step. Then he Inside Turns her as he triples back to his original start position; then they both triple to the side, and rock step
**NOTE: If anyone needs a refresher on these steps - come 15 minutes early to next class.

Week 5: Recap for Intermediate (Swing)

Week 5 was the last session on the Swing dance. The patterns that we learned in this season were: 1) Inside Turn to Check; 2) Lady's Forward Swivels; 3) Double Face Loops
For steps 1 & 2, see Week 4 Intermediate recap for detailed description

#3 - Double Face Loops: looks more confusing than it really is >> Man takes a handshake hold w/his partner, and then takes her other hand by placing his L hand over his R (so, his R hand under; his L hand over). Then, as he triples to his L (and turning slightly to his R), he loops his L hand over the girl's head, and then his R over his own head. Then they both do a rock step (she steps back w/L; he steps back onto R). Then they both triple to the other side - he loops his R hand over her head, and his L over his own; then they both rock step. **BUT - just before (or during) the rock step, he must place his R hand on her back. And he 'lets go' with his L hand.

Now . . . his L hand is free, and his R hand is on her back. (foxy move coming up) - He will now dance a triple to his L, but with a strong rotation to the L. Whilst doing this, he will send the gal into his L hand. In other words, rather than his L hand reaching for the gal (boring!!), he will 'send her TO his L hand. He then releases his R hand from her back, and does the 2nd triple to his R, and rock step.

Recap of 4th week's lesson - Beginner's

Firstly, we reviewed the basic Swing step from last week (a triple step to the L (gals R), and then a triple step to the R (gals L), and then both partners rock back, and then forward onto the other foot. Keep steps compact & put a slight swinging action into each of the triple steps. After the rock step, the man 'patticakes' his L hand to her R, then keeps her facing him on the 1st triple step, and THEN raises his hand to let her go under. Careful not to raise that hand any sooner 'cause girls will be girls - she'll take off on you! Gals: spin around AFTER that 1st triple step to face the man, and then you both do your 2nd triple to the side (facing each other), and the rock step. (This last step (w/the turn) is called the 'Outside Turn'.)

This week we learned the 'Inside Turn' - The man does the same steps (triple to the L, triple to the R, and then 'rock step' - but on the 1st triple, he turns 1/4 turn to his R while rotating his R arm xss his body to the R (just the opposite direction of last week's turn). At the end of that 1st triple she will be facing him, and they both triple to the side & rock step.

Another new step - 'She Turns, He Turns' - On the 1st triple, the man does a "forward" triple step, and he moves 'past' the girl (they trade places). Then w/a sharp turn to again face the girl, he does his 2nd triple to his R. They then both rock step. Gals: remember to do a full turn on your 1st triple so that you are 'facing' your partner. Then do your 2nd triple to your L (facing the man, and then rock step. VIP that you both do a full 180 degree turn to face your partner.

Recap of 4th week's lesson - Intermediate

First of all we reviewed last week's new Swing pattern - 'Inside Turn to Check'. Few things to remember on that step. Guys: Place your R hand on the R side of the lady's back when she turns into your R side. When you step forward into your rock step, keep it small because the lady will be going back in the other direction. Send her back, then spring her forward.
Gals: On your triple steps, resist turning - keep it straight, and THEN a sharp turn to the your rock step. Make a strong hip action when you step back, and keep the head and arm high.

We learned a new 'foxy' step called the 'Lady's forward Swivel Walks'. Guys: This is easy to lead - just step backward aggressively in a straight line - L,R.L,R,L,R. On each step pull your centre back - that will bring the girl forward. Keeping your L elbow slightly in front of your body, turn your hand (from the elbow only) - L, R,L,R,L,R. Gals: From the waist, swivel to your R, then L, R, L, R, L. To do this, turn your hips & knees (together) as far to the R, then to the L as you can. You might want to practice this by just standing still, turning strongly & then stepping. Then in the other direction - to get the feeling of the strong rotation in the lower body. L hand should be held out, or high, or even on the hip - but not down.
